内容摘要

Rational choice theory in economics generally ignores the role of emotion in economic decision-making, so most economists until recently considered elaborate accounts of emotion as outside the scope of their discipline. Numerous studies in psychology and neuroscience, however, have demonstrated that emotion plays an indispensable role in decision making process. In this talk, I will investigate the role emotion played in economic decision making, with an overview of studies on the effects of anticipated emotion and experienced emotion on judgment and various types of economic decision making, including decisions under risk and uncertainty, intertemporal decisions, and social decisions. I will discuss the evolutionary advantages of emotional responses in leading to fast and sound decisions in complex environments. Under certain circumstances, however, people’s natural emotional responses lead to biased judgment and suboptimal decisions. I present some cognitive strategies that could minimize the detrimental influence of emotions under such circumstances, as well as some examples of how emotional responses can be used to influence judgment, sway decisions, and improve persuasion.
